Product-Specific Questions

Will ice melt harm concrete surfaces? What surfaces are not suitable for ice melt?

Most ice melt products contain salt, which can harm concrete, especially newer concrete (less than one year old). Magnesium chloride is often considered a safer option for concrete that is at least a year old. It’s important to minimize the amount of ice melt used and always sweep it up after the ice has melted to prevent freeze-thaw cycles, which can damage surfaces over time. Note, no ice melter product is 100% safe for concrete surfaces.

Can fertilizer be used as ice melt?

No, fertilizer should not be used as ice melt. While some fertilizers contain salts, they are not formulated for melting ice and can be ineffective, even harmful. Using fertilizer as ice melt can damage your lawn, create runoff issues that pollute waterways, and may not even melt the ice effectively. It’s important to use products specifically designed for melting ice to ensure safety and effectiveness.
